Sony E-Mount Lenses Field Test - English

The specs of both lenses are really interesting, and are the following:

Sony-Zeiss Sonnar E – 24 mm f/1,8: 8 elements in 7 groups, two aspherical elements and an ED element, 7 blades circular diaphragm, driven focusing system. All of this in just 225 grams, with high quality construction and a black metal finish.

Sony E 10-18 mm F4 OSS: 10 elements in 8 groups, 7 blades circular diaphragm, constant apterture for the entire zoom range, OSS optical image stabilizer. Again the weight is 225 grams and construction and finishes are similar to the 24mm lens.

Given all the goods already explained results should have been really good, and this is exactly what happened. As usual don’t expect from me the same technical approach that Max Angeloni has but rather a field test aimed at testing the lenses in all the possible situations.

On the Field – 24 mm

Sony Nex 6 - Zeiss 24 mm - Jpeg f/1,8 - 1/4000 sec.

As soon as we attached the 24mm to the NEX6 we suddenly felt the build quality and the ease of use of this lens, also thanks to the metallic finish’s tactile feedback. Optically the lens is quite impressive: sharpness, bokeh at large apertures, color's rendition are all deserving to show the Zeiss logo on the barrel. Distorsion and vignetting are well controlled and only in some extreme situations we were able to find some chromatic aberrations. This is without any doubt a top class lens, with a versatile focal lenght that is useful in many photographic situations, from street to reportage, from landscapes to architectural shots. It’s thanks to its qualities that a lens like this allows a high quality camera such as the NEX6 to compete in quality with the most established reflex systems.

Let’s be honest...if it wasn’t for the different dimensions we could’ve easily overlooked the difference from the previous lens in the hand. The lack of the Zeiss brand is not an issue and it’s barely noticeable even looking at the pictures produced. A zoom like this, almost unique in the CSC market, it’s not easy to design and build but Sony’s efforts allowed users to have a lens that covers even the most wide angles with great quality, even for professional use.  I often have to shoot on the inside of prestigious hotels, bed and breakfasts, luxury apartments and mansions. It’s almost mandatory to use wide angle lenses in this case but this particular kind of lenses were lacking in the CSC market forcing to use reflex systems to complete the job. Nowadays with lenses like the 10-18 and high quality CSC cameras such as the NEX there’s no reason to be forced to use a different camera even for professional use, with the convenience of a small and lightweight  equipment. In order to highlight the low level of distorsions and vignetting for the entire focal range we deliberately decided to show pictures taken from RAW files, disabling any software correction. In some cases you will see the original out-of-camera- Jpegs with the software tweaks from Sony. It’s fair to say that the results are pretty much the same, apart from different colors and noise reduction.

Conclusions

Both lenses are highly recommended, top quality lenses. Both can easily stand their ground compared to its DSRL and CSC counterparts. Both are not cheap though (1.000€ for the Zeiss and 900€ for the 10-18 are not nuts), but prices are comparable to the competitors.
