Test Fujifilm X-T1 (Part II) - English

After years of traveling across Europe (and a bit further, sometimes) with a huge, heavy, reflex equipment, with my backpack full of whatever you may think…well, after all of that, one day I decided to stop this. It was 2009, I took a flight to Tokyo and my only photographic equipment was a tiny, very light compact camera (200gr. of weight, big as a cigarettes box). With this “powerful” device I kept shooting, and shooting, and shooting.

Fujifilm X-T1, Fujinon XF 18-55 mm @ 55mm - Iso 400 - f/13 - 1/125 sec.

Of course it wasn’t the best camera out there, it wasn’t as good as a reflex, but I enjoyed it. That was enough to change my mind and decide that I would wanted to use only small, lightweight devices. This is the reason why when I had the chance to put my hands on a Fuji X100, back in 2011, I started to hail as a miracle. Such a high quality from such a small and lightweight camera… It was the dawn of a new era: finally manufacturers wanted to satisfy many users that, like me, wanted to have a small but capable camera in their hands. Now it’s 2014 and we all know what happened in the last three years. Fuji launched the X-series cameras and lenses, other manufacturers decided to develop its own CSC line, as well as some high end compact cameras.

Now, the latest Fuji camera is the X-T1 and we may say…well, we may say we went back again to the reflex philosophy. “Hey wait! Really, reflex?” Yes, it’s exactly what I’m saying.

Fujifilm X-T1, Fujinon XF 18-55 mm @ 36mm - Iso 320 -  f/8,0 - 1/125 sec.

The X-T1 is the closest thing to a reflex that I’ve used since that day in 2009. For the first time since I started to use CSC cameras I haven’t had that subtle and almost unconcious feeling to have a slightly lesser camera compared to a DSLR. Pictures were good, sure, but sometimes the AF system, sometimes the viewfinder, sometimes the responsiveness left something to be desired…You know what I mean.

Fujifilm X-T1, Fujinon XF 35 mm f/1,4  - Iso 400 -  f/1,4 - 1/1000 sec.

Fujifilm X-T1, Fujinon XF 35 mm f/1,4  - Iso 400 -  f/7,1 - 1/500 sec.

Fujifilm X-T1, Fujinon XF 18-55 mm @ 22mm - Iso 320 -  f/3,2 - 1/125 sec.

Trust me when I say that the X-T1 won’t let you feel like that. I’ve used it in so many ways, in so many situations, even the ones when a CSC camera shouldn’t feel “right at home” and I never felt the need to have something else, even if I was surrounded by people carrying around heavy professional equipment. The only shortcoming of the system is the lack of telephoto lenses over 300mm equivalent. But it looks like in the future even lenses like that will come… As Max said, the image quality is the same of the other X-series cameras (X-pro1, X-E2) but all the rest will let you feel like it’s a whole different story. This camera is capable of a 8fps burst mode, is weather sealed, has all the dials and buttons you need, has an incredibly fast AF…and that viewfinder! Big, bright, beautiful…Only two years ago all of this was like asking for the moon!

That being said I also focused on wildlife and nature photography, not only on my travel photography. And again, it was funny to see me with my small and lightweight backpack between people with huge backpacks and trolleys needed to carry their massive photographic gear. I’m not saying it is on par with all the specialistic cameras and lenses (even if it’s not that far) but given prices, dimensions and weight…is it worth it? Do everyone really need the best of the best? The Fuji users now has the possibility to finally do things they wasn’t even allowed to think of just a couple of years ago, and they can do this with their all-day camera and the available lenses.

Ok, it time to focus on the shortcomings of this camera, we don’t want Fuji to get a big head!

The buttons on the back, menu buttons included, are all too small and encased and sometimes this forces you to move your eye from the viewfinder even if you’re not supposed to. Also, in my opinion the “View Mode” button position is awkward, I would rather see it placed near the display button on the back of the camera.

The Ev compensation and shutter speed dial would have had a better feeling if swapped, at least for me. Too many times I found myself changing the EV compensation while I wanted to change the shutter speed. It was only in the most critical moments, when you want to change settings in the shortest time possible but it happened.

My third complain is shared with some of the other X-series cameras (i.e.X-100S) and is related to the impossibility to shoot RAW on a double exposure, a feature that the X-E1 has…Why is it missing on the X-T1?

What else should I say before leaving room to the image gallery? Not that much, to be honest…I have just one thing to say: at this point I think Fuji should focus on a weather sealed 300mm lens (as bright as possible, I would say F3,5) in order to fill what is the only “hole” in the Fuji lenses lineup. Starting from 10mm to 200mm all the focal lenghts are more than covered with both prime and zoom lenses. Given the high quality and the features the X-T1 is packed with, I think it would be wise to push the bar a step forward on the telephoto lenses.
